Lives and works between London and France.
Suzanne Treister presents two interconnected bodies of work, SURVIVOR (F) and The Escapist BHST (Black Hole Spacetime). These were originally two independent projects, until one day the artist recognised a portal opening up between them, located somewhere inside the painting. She saw the makings of an imaginary museum being fleshed out between the works in outer space. The two projects were then conjoined on the edge of a place unthinkable to most, yet stationed at the foreground of Treister’s practice. Combining the ecstatic energetic state of the mystical with the agnostic and iterative nature of the scientific, the projects take the form of alchemical diagrams, cosmic maps, and visual science-fiction impressions.
Transporting the viewer to an imaginary state anchored to one’s reality but in a tempest of their articulated knowledge, Treister relocates the mind and asks the viewer to make a hallucinatory jump in order to enter a disembodied viewing state where she begins to unpack ideas of historical lineage, emerging futures, radical technology, alternative belief systems, and potential other worlds. These meshed frames of questioning and answering spill over pages and pages of watercolours that line the two rooms like a kaleidoscopic panorama of the multiverses we know and don’t know. As an artist, Treister always edges closer and closer to these exceptional states of strangeness until she notes something more divergent in the distance and sets on a path to go there.
