Contemporary And (C&) is a dynamic multimedia platform created by Julia Grosse and Yvette Mutumba as a repository for the exploration of ideas and discourse on contemporary art. Contemporary And (C&) has taken shape in various forms: as an art magazine, digital platform, and literary art installations, that all explore issues related to contemporary art from Africa and its global Diaspora.
For AB7, Contemporary And (C&) will be presenting a version of their project The C& Center of Unfinished Business. This mobile literary installation takes the form of an environment that encompasses a mobile library and reading room. The C& Center of Unfinished Business offers visitors a selection of book titles that examine the structures, untold stories, and unseen gaps of colonial power relations through the lens of the African Diaspora.
The book selection for The C& Center of Unfinished Business is a site-specific curation and arrangement in dialogue with the city and location. The project aims to emphasise how these inherent colonial structures and relations have an ongoing impact on our comprehension of art, sciences, and society in our contemporary moment. Evolving around central questions responding to the many complex layers of global networks, The C& Center of Unfinished Business gives space for the public to reflect on the expansion and limitation of our current culture through the lens of a literary experience. Visitors to AB7 will be able to interact, read, and engage with the selection of titles specifically curated for the biennale in an effort to utilise the printed and other forms of literature as a tool for critical discourse.
