Navine G. Khan-Dossos presents Ta Nea Xysta, painting in real-time the mural she created in situ, especially for the 7th Athens Biennale at the back entrance of the former Santaroza Courthouse. The artist revives and resignifies the traditional technique of Chios known as xysta, shaping new meanings through the conversation between traditional and contemporary symbols depicted in this ethno-mathematical painting. Cinema ECLIPSEd w/ AIFF: Titane

Julia Ducournau
DANAOS (109 Kifissias Avenue)

(2021, France/Belgium, 108’)
A young boy with a bruised face is found by customs officers at the airport. The boy claims to be a child who went missing 10 years ago. His father’s nightmare seems to be coming to an end, all the while a series of brutal murders cause unrest in the area. Julia Ducournau, who we were introduced to with “Raw'' five years ago, offers up the most chilling film of the year and with provocative boldness and spunky direction earns herself the Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or award. On a par with Cronenberg’s “Crash”, “Titane” goes down the colliding routes of physical horror, forcefully changes gear on the concepts of identity and sexual behaviour, accelerates fearlessly and crosses the finish line as a cinematic extreme. A frenzied experience not to be forgotten.

In Heaven: An Alternate Reality Game

Sophia Giovannitti w/ Tourmaline
Former Department Store Fokas • ground floor

The Athens Biennale invites you to the premiere of the short film In Heaven: An Alternate Reality Game (2021), directed by Sophia Giovanniti and co-starring and produced by Tourmaline. The film functions both as an artwork and an advertisement for escort services, aestheticizing the boundary between art and sex industries. In Heaven invites the viewer to participate in an "alternate reality game" via a conceptual work unfolding from the viewer’s willingness to acknowledge the socio-erotic and confessional labour demanded of precarious artists as labour.

The screening will be followed by Giovannitti's reading of an excerpt from her in-progress book Working Girl (2023) on art, sex, and capitalism as well as a Q&A with both Giovannitti and Tourmaline.

Sophia Giovannitti is an artist and writer based in New York. She studies the commodification of the parts of ourselves we hold dear, positing, from a materialist perspective, that there is no way out but through. Through her ongoing series of performance-based studies, she seeks to trouble and re-choreograph the flow of capital through the art and sex industries. Her first book, Working Girl, is forthcoming from Verso in 2023.

Cinema ECLIPSEd w/ AIFF: Disclosure

Sam Fedder
DANAOS (109 Kifissias Avenue)

(2020, USA, 100')
With the often dismal, twisted portrayal of transgender people in Hollywood and on TV as its starting point, the utterly enlightening “Disclosure” tells a story full of harmful stereotypes, examining how the collective narrative and consequently our perception of trans people was shaped. While the visibility of trans people increases, signaling the potential early beginnings of a positive social change at the same time violence against them is ongoing, making it even more paramount that they participate in the cultural narrative. Laverne Cox (“Orange Is the New Black”), Lilly Wachowski (“The Matrix”), MJ Rodriguez (“Pose”) and Jamie Clayton (“Sense8”) among others, share personal experiences and reactions, in a revolutionary film about how we perceive trans people.

Cinema ECLIPSEd w/ AIFF: So Foul a Sky

Álvaro Pulpeiro
STELLA (34 Tenedou Str., Fokionos Negri, Kypseli)

(2021, Colombia / Spain / UK, 83')
“So foul a sky clears not without a storm”, writes Shakespeare in “King John” a quote borrowed by Joseph Conrad as an epigraph in his “Nostromo”. It’s no wonder then that Álvaro Pulpeiro’s fly on the wall documentary, with its poetic title, travels to Venezuela, a stone’s throw away from Nostromo’s Columbia (Costaguana), observing a potentially affluent country brought to its knees by a political crisis. With a pensive voiceover intermittently throughout the film and images juxtaposing natural beauty with human degradation, Pulpeiro mixes a cinematic adhesive aiming to cement together what is completely broken. Scattered radio excerpts of tense speaking at times by Maduro at other times by Guaidó, hints at the American factor of Trump’s administration, migrant flows, smugglers of the remaining barrels of oil… A documentary that immerses you in its world both near and far, a world defeated.

Cinema ECLIPSEd w/ AIFF: Memoria

Apichatpong Weerasethakul
IDEAL (46 Panepistimiou Str.)

(2021, Colombia / Thailand / France / Germany / Mexico / Quatar, 136')
In Columbia, a loud bang wakes a British woman up. As these small sound bombs, which only she can hear, start to multiply, the heroine decides to find where they are coming from. However, the answer to their origin is shocking. One of the few times when the artistic pairing between a director and an actor has proven to be so fitting and exciting, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Tilda Swinton’s “Memoria” brings together two beguiling beings and places them en route to an unforgettable cinematic date with the unknown. As with previous films of the Palme d’Or winning director, watching “Memoria” becomes a mystical process, resembling meditation, which rewards the patient viewer with an utterly mystifying and evocative experience the like of which is rarely had in cinemas nowadays. Recipient of the Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for a one of a kind film, which can only be truly enjoyed in a dark cinema venue.

Cinema ECLIPSEd w/ AIFF: Velvet Underground

Todd Haynes
IDEAL (46 Panepistimiou Str.)

(2021, USA, 120')
When the great American director of “Safe”, “Carol” and “I’m Not There” undertakes the telling of the story of one of the three most radical rock groups in the history of music (alongside the Beatles and the Stones), at the very least, one would expect an unconventional music film. Todd Haynes does just that as through the medium of vivid and magnificently experimental cinema he offers up the thrilling chronicle of a legendary age and the wonderfully damned people who defined it and lived in it: comprised of exceptional archival material, with the participation of John Cale and Maureen Tucker, sole survivors of the band, the voice of Lou Reed commenting and a neverending audiovisual mosaic magically taking form on screen, causing chills.
Foreword by music critic Markos Frangos.

Cinema ECLIPSEd w/ AIFF: Paris is Burning

Jennie Livingston
TRIANON (21 Kodrigktonos Str.)

(1990, USA, 78')
A landmark of a film on gay, trans and drag culture. Filmed in “Houses” and “Balls” venues, Jennie Livingston openly speaks about the people who drew the shortest straw of the American (and not only American) capitalist reality. And herein lies the triumph of “Paris”: It doesn’t merely describe a subculture and its rules, but also points out the inherent class consciousness of people whose own nature is victimised by the status quo which wildly marginalises them while simultaneously dousing them in values hard to live up to. And while most of them were ultimately, prematurely and tragically lost, the words of the legendary Dorian Corey remain painfully unforgettable: “You don't have to bend the whole world. I think it's better to just enjoy it. Pay your dues, and just enjoy it. If you shoot an arrow and it goes real high, hooray for you.”

Introduction by House of Careola, accompanied by Voguing Show.

Problem Hip Area: Fat Femininity as Treason in Modern Greek Culture

Sofia Apostolidou
Former Department Store Fokas • ground floor

Bodily imaginaries, like the ‘body politic’, have powerfully shaped conceptions of the Nation. At the same time, nation-building is produced and sustained by normative fantasies of the feminine body. This talk explores representations of fat femininities in Greek popular culture as evidence of aspirations for modernity and Europeanness. Representations of fatness are not only contextualized by cultural specificities but can also play a central role in the formation of national identity narratives. Where discourses around women’s bodies and the Nation are usually around tropes of motherhood, Apostolidou is arguing that performing eurocentric slenderness is also a part of the Nation’s demands, especially in countries where belonging to Europeanness and Westerness is contested.

Sofia Apostolidou is a member of the Research Training Group “Minor Cosmopolitanisms” and a joint PhD candidate at the University of Potsdam/University of Melbourne. She was a founding member of the activist group the “Political Fatties”, with whom she has published the collection “Fatties: Aspects of Fatness as a Political Identity”, and organised conferences, workshops and performances in Athens, Thessaloniki, Berlin, and Amsterdam. In 2019 she published the article “Weighing Posthumanism: Fatness and Contested Humanity” (co-authored with Dr Jules Sturm) in the Journal of Social Inclusion, and her chapter on fat femininity, modernity and national Greek identity is included in the Routledge International Handbook of Fat Studies (2021).

TRIANON (21 Kodrigktonos Str.)

There are those creators who direct our world and those who define and make their own. Bertrand Mandico certainly belongs to the latter. On a planet of women, Roxy unwittingly unearths a murderer and is condemned along with her mother by the local community to be hunted and killed. But it’s one thing to summarise the plot and quite another to watch the film itself, for then one must think back to the videoclip extravaganzas of the early 80s, Ken Russell and Terry Gilliam, Hammer Horror and the 60’s Corman film adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe, Macbeth or even the world of Kate Bush and Josef von Sternberg, who lend their names to characters in the film. An eclectic explosion of unique audiovisual atmosphere, a film that cannot be classified, experimental, sensual and dreamy.

EXTRA_visit

Justice Square

"Everything is suspended. Everything is on the verge of change. Giving up can be elevating as an alternative to conventional understandings of success. Gravity is quickly turned into weightlessness. A beautiful scene appears, of a corporal ascent, a figure that is more than one. Empathy is the ultimate perceptive tool as bodies and sounds merge. The assemblage of images – aural, tactile and visual – becomes a vehicle for the transcendence of humanness. Becoming extra, more than and with a square, a thing, an earthly – or not – critter."
– Panos Giannikopoulos

Julian Weber presents a three-hour performance influenced by the genre of sci-fi and his research for his work EXTRA (2019). With the sounds by Kinga Ötvös, the artist sinks into the Justice Square and through his movement he engages the environment by exploring its surprising articulation. His body journeys in an unusual time and turns into different matter, becoming more than human. Weber introduces elements that stimulate different senses, aspiring to question the norm and introduce new constructions.

By building their own centralised data platform in Extractor, the visitors/players will reveal the mechanisms underlying digital capitalism.

The Last Judgement – Reloaded

Former Department Store Fokas • ground floor

Nektarios Pappas’s performance The Last Judgement – Reloaded emerges from his sound sculpture Pandemonium. Inspired by past stories and current politics, he invites the public to question contemporary reality through the construction of liminal spaces where the boundaries between truth and fakes news are blurred. Utilising dark humour, Pappas activates the viewer’s perspective on what is truly happening in our society.

Bios.ECLIPSE: DJ set by Breaking Moves + Liegota

Former Santaroza Courthouse • yard

From soulboy to beat machine charmer, the journey to the Mecca of music seems endless for Breakin Moves. An Athenian DJ and digger initiated by underground record stores and dusty warehouses in the heart of the ancient city, Breakin Moves has in his musical arsenal from Turkish Psychedelia, Afro Beats and Boogie to dark Roland TR-707 rhythms, Deep House and even Jungle from the early ’90s. He is a founding member of Bomba Energia Sound System.

Liegota is a DJ and producer from Athens. An abstract but joyful take on electronic dance music production, something like “generic gone wrong” kind of thing. His style collapses confused house music and wavy ambiences in techno hooks and synth riffs but never in the right order. When he DJs, it is mostly electro-italo-disco mixed with various other odd stuff.

The Sweet Spot of Memory: A Performative Talk with Loukoumades and Honey

Schliemann-Mela Hall • yard

What does it mean to re-enact a collective memory and in particular a sweet memory? A century-old family-owned shop selling traditional fried dough drizzled with honey, “loukoumades”, moved away from its shop in Schliemann-Mela Hall, a venue of the current 7th Athens Biennale ECLIPSE. With this change, Athens lost a landmark, a meeting point but also a Sweet Spot. How can the collective and the individual memory be affected by such an incident? How has our innocence and childhood been forced to “grow up” almost overnight in such a “traumatic” way?

A performative talk with freshly prepared Loukoumades with Honey according to the family recipe of Fyllas family, the owners of Loukoumades Aigaion. Following the challenges and aspects of the exhibition, the representatives of the Fyllas family George and Iliana alongside the chef pâtissier Antonis Selekos, art theorist and writer Theophilos Tramboulis and artist Poka-Yio go down the memory lane in search of its lost Sweet Spot and look for the dimensions that this kind of eclipse could mean for the present and the future of Athenian citizens.

During the talk, Aeneas Sakos, former employee of Loukoumades Aigaion, will prepare and offer the visitors appetising loukoumades.

Iliana Fylla is an art and culture specialist, Dr in the History of contemporary dance. She often works in the cultural communication area for different entities such as artistic groups; cultural institutions; media or private companies.
George Fyllas is a finance and management engineer; former owner of Loukoumades Aigaion and the present owner of Living Theros boutique hotel in Tinos island.
Antonis Selekos is chef pâtissier and collaborator of Funky Gourmet.
Theophilos Tramboulis is curator of contemporary art publications and exhibitions and translator.
Poka-Yio is visual artist and curator.

Bios.ECLIPSE: DJ set by K.atoy + Jacob of Cappadocia

Former Santaroza Courthouse • yard

At her most comfortable moment, in the hazy glow of the morning, K.atou is the kind of DJ that prefers a time at the party where the edges are worn out and a more meaningful relationship can be struck up with the crowd. The Greek selector, of course, has the means to ignite any time of the night, but there is after all a certain kind of magic that comes over a party’s later hours when the crowd is ready to fully experience the sounds being presented to them.

Jacob has been “lost” in disco, house, and electronic music since high school. His big love for music and dance led him to take over the decks, always aiming to pass on that ecstatic feeling to the crowd. His taste and eagerness to share his voyage have taken him to many places and highly acclaimed dance floors such as Glastonbury’s legendary Block9 stage and London’s Dalston Superstore as well as the local Athenian staples of dance music such as six d.o.g.s, Romantso, Cantina Social to name a few.

and suddenly it all blossoms

RIBOCA2
Former Department Store Fokas • ground floor

The Athens Biennale and the Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA) in collaboration with the International Biennial Association (IBA) invite you on Sunday, November 21, at 18:30 to the premiere of RIBOCA2 film, and suddenly it all blossoms, in Athens. A panel discussion will follow the screening.

and suddenly it all blossoms is the transformation of the homonymous 2nd Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art into a feature film, following the abrupt stop of RIBOCA's plans by the rapid spread of COVID-19 just a few weeks before the opening; a journey through the complexities of our time that shifts between hopes, desires, and doubts, unfolding in a Tarkovskian set, guided by the artworks of RIBOCA2.

Following the aspiration of the International Biennial Association to foster cooperation and dialogue between biennials assuring for the model to remain an active laboratory for the most relevant artistic and cultural practices worldwide, this encounter functions as an opportunity to open a dialogue around how biennials can cooperate and in which ways multiple discourses can merge to open relevant questions about what biennials represent today.

The participation of Inese Dabola (and suddenly it all blossoms film producer, director of RIBOCA strategic partnerships), Katerina Gregos (Director of EMST, the Greek National Museum of Contemporary Art and Chief Curator of RIBOCA1), Christian Oxenius (Independent Curator, Head of Research and Content Manager for IBA), and Poka-Yio (Founding Director of Athens Biennale and Artistic Director of the 7th Athens Biennale ECLIPSE) will ensure a lively discussion linking two biennials and their wider artistic communities.

and suddenly it all blossoms | Synopsis
The film and suddenly it all blossoms is a journey through the complexities of our time, shifting between hopes, desires, and doubts around our present moment. It follows a voice whose perspective on our disconcerting global situation unfolds as a meditation, guided and prompted by the exhibition's artworks. The set itself - a Tarkovskian ecosystem of a decommissioned power station, an abandoned paintball field, warehouses, bird colonies, cruise ships and railway lines amongst empty lots and wastelands - exists as a metaphor for the ruptures of Soviet ideals and capitalist hopes. Presented as one continuous shot, the film is a reflection of standing on thresholds in a world suspended between old and new times. The drifting narrative remains tied closely to its setting, learning and growing from the Latvian and Baltic context, where 'worlds have ended' many times over through centuries of occupations, wars and economical upheavals, rebirths, and reinventions.

This action functions not as an act of destruction, but as an act of decentralisation.
