Kameelah Janan Rasheed is a research-based conceptual artist who utilises the language of advertising as her medium of choice to implore visceral responses from her viewers. Signs, billboards, and posters are just some of the tools Rasheed employs to make queries or declarative statements to unearth buried histories and criticise the impact of visual culture on the zeitgeist. Rasheed has developed an interdisciplinary working mode that actively extrapolates text from books and transmutes them into the physical world. This transmutation offers the viewer a truly transformative experience.
For AB7 she will be presenting Stack ll, which continues her utilisation of a variety of fonts, grammatical approaches, and visual aesthetics to cultivate her own unique artistic vernacular. Expounding on her interest in navigating the casual expectations of text under autocracy, Rasheed uses her practice as a forum to explore Black poetics, storytelling, and non-linear ways of narrating the Black experience. Anchored in the interests of intertextuality, literacy, archiving, and ecology, Rasheed pushes the boundaries on how one can experience text while speaking to Blackness.
