Nektarios Pappas creates conceptual works and objects that investigate the tension often occuring between the ideas of fact versus fiction in relation to historical and contemporary politics. He utilizes dark humour as a device to critique the contemporary moment, where a thin line separates truth, fake news, and reality. Pappas seeks to create works that play within these liminal spaces to activate the viewer’s perspective on what is truly happening in our society.
Within his practice, Pappas employs the use of video, sound, performance, and sculpture as his mediums of artistic expression. This multimedia approach to his practice enables him to create visually arresting and often dramatic experiences for the viewer. This applies to works such as his 2016 collaborative installation with Anna Papaeti, which used light and sound as devices to comment on sleep deprivation, and curated environments that used prison torture tactics. For AB7, Pappas will be presenting The Last Judgement – Reloaded, which is anchored by his sound sculpture Pandemonium. The piece explores the themes of fear of artistic critique and death as an end to creation, illustrating Pappas’s desire to create situations based on past stories and current politics to push the public to reimage and rigorously question contemporary reality.
