Athens-based visual artist Petros Moris makes work that investigates the relationship between manifestations of memory, history, and processed-based explorations, investigating how these ideas could inform our future. These ideas are often articulated through sculpture and writing, enabling Moris to study the arrangements of material, as well as technological and cultural environments. These interrogations result in a deeper dive into interrelations between the natural and social environs. This multilayered approach results in a unique and insightful manifestation of ideas through his artistic gestures.
For AB7, Petros Moris will be presenting Nature of Translation (to Theresa), a work dedicated to American-Korean artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, author of the novel Dictée. Via a hybrid of ancient mythologies and a network of human and non-human mediators, the written work dissects unresolved relationships between nature and civilization. Moris uses this text as source material for further exploration and interpretation within his work. He sees the piece as a tool to explore the cultural and physical bonds between language and materiality.
Moris seeks to artistically expound ideas related to the body and language, personal and collective memory, identity, and gender. He aims to express poetically his artistic gesture through organic form, inscriptions, and visual signifiers that reference marble. Moreover, he employs post-digital fabrication techniques as a tool for translation that creates an interesting visual tension between the past, present, and future. This transitory approach enables Nature of Translation to emulate the notions of metamorphosis and movement that were central to the ideas evoked in Dictée.
