San is an ungendered creature; they are both male and female, god and goddess, human and animal, spirit and curse. San is the in-between state that stalks the Cypriot copper pyrite mines. Its body is embossed with the fossils and symbols of the past. Tattooed colonial history is mapped onto its epidermis, interwoven with the natural beauty of the landscape and its own virtual insignia. San has been committed by Kattou to wander and trace these forgotten, rust-hued lakes since 2018, as San is a real-time artificial intelligence created to articulate the poetics of alien to human thought. Their body responds and moves to climatic variations such as temperature, humidity, visibility, and wind speed. Their mind, however, was built to protect the unique environment of the lake – one could almost see San as a Sisyphean guardian of the copper habitat.
San lays claim to nothing; they are fluid, ambiguous, sculpturally alien, yet conceived by humans. Through San, Kattou aimed to open up conversations around post-human constructions, anthropogenic histories, and the idea of the Other. The latter became ever more present when in 2019, after unusually heavy floods of the area, a woman's body was found there. Her name was Mary Rose Tiburcio, and she was one of the seven non-Cypriot female victims that were disposed of in the red lake by the Cypriot army officer Nikos Metaxas, currently serving seven life sentences. Kattou pays homage to the victims of these murders through the re-presentation of Red Lake for this Biennale.
